Quick Tips: Styli Care

Stylus Tips 101

The stylus is one of the most important components of a turntable, yet it often goes overlooked. At Real Groovy, we care about preserving your records, so if you can’t remember the last time you changed your stylus, keep reading!

What is a Stylus?

The stylus (or needle) sits in the record groove, vibrating as it traces the sound-encoded walls. These vibrations travel through the cantilever to the cartridge, where they are converted into electrical signals—ultimately producing sound. The quality of playback depends on both stylus condition and type.

Types of Styli

There are various stylus shapes, but here are the most common:

Spherical (Conical)

  • Most affordable and widely used.
  • Resembles a ballpoint pen tip.
  • Larger radius prevents tracking of fine high-frequency details.
  • Produces less surface noise but generally offers less detail.
  • Often requires a tracking force above 3 grams, which may increase record wear.

Elliptical (Bi-Radial)

  • Features two radii, allowing for better groove contact.
  • Tracks more accurately, resulting in improved sound quality.
  • Lighter tracking force reduces wear compared to spherical styli.
  • Requires precise cartridge and tonearm alignment.
  • Wears out faster due to greater groove interaction.

Hyperelliptical (Shibata, Fine Line, Stereohedron)

  • Advanced design maximizing groove contact.

  • Produces superior sound clarity and detail.

  • More durable than elliptical styli but more expensive.

  • Requires careful alignment for optimal performance.

When Should You Replace Your Stylus?

Most manufacturers recommend replacing your stylus every 1,000 hours of playback. However, waiting too long can cause irreversible record damage before you even notice sound degradation. A worn stylus leads to inner groove wear, which lowers record value and playback quality.

Stylus Longevity Tips

Keep Your Records Clean

  • Dust and debris affect sound and can damage your stylus.
  • Use an anti-static carbon fiber brush before each play.
  • Deep clean records every 2-3 years and replace inner sleeves regularly.

Clean Your Stylus

  • Use a stylus brush with a small drop of isopropyl alcohol.
  • Alcohol-free solutions are available for those who prefer them.
  • Be gentle—cantilevers are fragile!

Secure Your Tonearm

  • Always lock the tonearm when not in use to prevent accidental damage.

Set Tracking Force Correctly

  • Too heavy: Wears out the stylus and damages records.
  • Too light: Causes skipping and improper tracking.
  • Use a tracking force gauge and follow the manufacturer’s recommendations.

Monitor Listening Hours

  • Some keep a notebook to log playtime.
  • Occasional listeners should set a specific replacement date instead.

What About Moving Coil Cartridges?

Moving coil (MC) cartridges cannot have their styli replaced—only re-tipped. Contact your cartridge manufacturer for servicing options, or you may need to replace the entire cartridge.

Final Advice

  • If you can’t remember when you last changed your stylus, replace it now.
  • Bought a secondhand turntable? Replace the stylus immediately.
  • Before purchasing a turntable, check for stylus availability, as some models have discontinued parts.
