Beginner's Guide: Choosing The Right Speakers

How to Choose the Right Speakers for Your Turntable Setup

Choosing the right speakers is crucial for getting the best sound from your turntable. Here's a quick guide to help you make an informed decision.

Powered vs. Passive Speakers

First, understand the difference between powered and passive speakers:

  • Powered speakers have a built-in amplifier, making them easier to set up and providing great value for money, as you don’t need an external amp.
  • Passive speakers require a separate amplifier, but they offer better sound quality and longevity. This is because passive speakers have more room inside for better dynamics, as they don’t need to house an amp. External amplifiers also provide superior sound quality, as they are better cooled (since they’re not crammed inside a speaker) and can be larger, allowing for more powerful and refined performance.

1. Consider Your Listening Space

For smaller rooms, bookshelf speakers work great, providing clear sound without overpowering the space. In larger rooms, floor-standing speakers or bigger bookshelf speakers may be needed for fuller sound and better bass.

2. Match Your Amplifier's Power and Impedance

Your amplifier’s power should match the recommended power range of your speakers. Speakers typically come in 4, 6, or 8 ohms, so check your amplifier's output and make sure it’s compatible with your speakers’ impedance. Mismatched impedance can lead to distortion or damage.

3. Speaker Cone Material and Tone

The material of the speaker cone affects sound quality:

  • Paper cones offer a warm, natural sound with rich midrange.
  • Polypropylene or plastic cones provide clear sound, though slightly less warmth.
  • Kevlar or carbon fiber cones give accurate, detailed sound with minimal distortion.

4. Tuning to Your Preference

Speakers emphasize different frequency ranges:

  • Bass-heavy speakers are great for genres like rock or electronic.
  • Balanced speakers provide even sound across all frequencies.

Treble-sensitive speakers are ideal for jazz or classical, emphasising crisp highs.

5. Speaker Placement

Position speakers away from walls and at ear level for optimal sound. Experiment with placement to find the best acoustics for your space.
