OUR STORY
“I had this dream to create the best record store in the country, if not the world. That’s always been what this is about.”
Where Music Lives
Real Groovy is the ultimate destination for all things music and more in Aotearoa. We've been living and breathing vinyl since 1981, making us the longest running secondhand record store in NZ. With no signs of stopping, we remain 100% unique and fiercely independent.
As well as continuing to offer the largest new & used vinyl and CD collection, we're committed to listening and growing with our customers needs (music or other). Whether you're after the perfect novelty gift, on the hunt for a new read, in desperate need of a turntable upgrade or digging through our world class record crates, we've got you covered.
Here's where it all started...
1981
This is our owner Chris (and Chris), outside the first official 'Real Groovy' on Mt Eden Road.
1987
As cramped as it was short-lived, RG moved into the now iconic corner of 492 Queen Street.
1991
438 Queen Street saw the beginnings of the Real Groovy we know today. We had a magazine, gigs for local bands, and began to cement ourselves in the culture of Central Auckland.
2016
In classic Tāmaki Makaurau fashion, 438 was set to be demolished. We opened up shop again at 369 Queen Street in an old Salvation Army church
2019
Once again, we had to fight the Queen St Gods to stay afloat. We relocated to 520 Queen Street, close to Karangahape Road.
Dingbats
We also opened up our pop up for trades and sale vinyl, CDs, and cassettes in the carpark upstairs.
2023
The big move! Our favourite store to date, we moved just off Queen Street into our current home at 19 Victoria St West.
With more space, we've been able to host more gigs and listening parties, show off more stock, and invest more time into our place in the Auckland Central community. We've come a long long way, and can't wait to go even further. For the love of music, pop in and visit us sometime.
