Jay-Jay Johanson released Poison following the success of Whiskey and Tattoo. The album was a hit in Sweden and France, reaching No. 20 in the French charts. The singles Keep It a Secret and Believe in Us became popular alternative hits across Europe. As the album art implies, Poison is arguably one of Jay-Jay Johanson's most sinister works. To create this feel, Jay-Jay Johanson collaborated with Robin Guthrie, who is famous for his work with Cocteau Twins. Despite the themes of betrayal and misunderstanding, Johanson's dark humour is never far away.
